The client wished to rehabilitate an old coffee plantation on the slopes of Mount Meru, Tanzania, converting it into a botanical garden and stingless bee sanctuary, with accommodation for visitors and researchers. We mapped out the bungalow positions in person along a pathway through the forest, between trees and taking advantage of the best views. The simple charcoal forms would recede into the landscape, glowing like subtle lanterns in the night through perforated steel security/insect screens. Glazing slices through the structure, framing views in interesting ways. The plan and facade design was structured in line with the Fibonacci Sequence/Golden Mean, in keeping with the client's passion for art and the order of the natural world.
